Bulls require a well-balanced and carefully formulated diet to ensure optimal health, reproductive performance, and overall productivity. The feed should be nutritionally complete, diverse, palatable, and easy to digest. It should include a proper mix of fine and coarse feeds, green forage, and concentrates. High-quality protein sources, such as soybean meal, are essential, and the concentrate portion should make up approximately 40% of the total nutritional value.
It is important not to overfeed juicy or roughage-based feeds, as excessive amounts can lead to an enlarged digestive system, commonly referred to as "grass-bellied," which may reduce efficiency and affect breeding performance. High-carbohydrate feeds like corn should be limited, as they can negatively impact the bull’s weight and breeding ability. Protein-rich feeds like soybean meal are beneficial but may have a slightly acidic effect on the body, potentially affecting sperm quality. Silage, although alkaline, contains organic acids that can also be harmful if overfed.
Minerals such as bone meal and salt play a critical role in maintaining the health of the bull and semen quality. Bone meal, in particular, is vital for calcium and phosphorus balance, while salt supports digestion, appetite, and metabolism. However, excessive salt intake can suppress sexual function. If the concentrate diet leads to poor semen quality, reducing the amount of concentrate and adding high-quality hay can help improve it. When the concentrate is too simple, adding animal-based proteins like eggs, fishmeal, or milk can enhance semen quality. These animal proteins are especially important for bulls that are frequently bred.
The daily feeding amount for concentrates should be around 0.4–0.6 kg per 100 kg of body weight, with a maximum of 8 kg per day, though 5–6 kg is more common. Green roughage should be provided at 1–1.5 kg of hay, 0.6–0.8 kg of silage, and 0.8–1.0 kg of carrots per 100 kg of body weight. Total green roughage should be about 10–12 kg per day. In summer, when fresh grass is available, it can be fed at 2–3 kg per 100 kg of body weight. Additional supplements like 0.4–0.5 kg of eggs, 2–3 kg of milk, 100–150 g of fishmeal, 100–150 g of bone meal, and 70–80 g of salt per day are recommended.
Clean and sufficient water must always be available. However, bulls should avoid drinking water immediately before or after exercise, mating, or semen collection to prevent health issues. Water should never be contaminated or from unsanitary sources.
Proper management of breeding bulls is equally important. Bulls have unique characteristics, including strong memory, defensive reflexes, and sexual responsiveness. They remember people and events for years, which means past experiences—positive or negative—can influence their behavior. Their defensive instincts are strong, so strangers should be approached with caution. During breeding, their sexual reflexes are intense, and improper handling or long periods without mating can lead to bad habits or aggression. While individual temperaments vary, all breeding bulls share these key traits. Effective management involves careful environmental control, consistent training, and a deep understanding of their behavioral needs.
