Soybeans, also known as sweet potato in some regions, are sometimes referred to as "raw geuca" in certain areas. This is an annual leguminous plant, and its edible part consists of underground roots. In recent years, yam and its tubers have become increasingly popular due to their crisp texture, juiciness, and high levels of sugar and protein, making them suitable for both raw consumption and cooking. As a result, the area dedicated to its cultivation has been expanding rapidly.
First, soil selection plays a crucial role in growing this crop. Since the edible portion is the underground root, it's essential to provide a favorable soil environment. Sandy loam with good depth, moderate fertility, and well-drained conditions is ideal for optimal growth.
Next, thorough soil preparation and adequate base fertilizer are necessary. After the previous harvest, deep plowing to a depth of 25–30 cm should be done. Mix in 1,000 pounds of fire ash, 2,000 pounds of pig manure, and 500 pounds of bean cake per mu. Two months before sowing, break up the soil clods and create raised beds that are 1.2–1.3 meters wide, with furrows about 25 cm deep to ensure proper drainage.
For sowing, soybean seeds require higher temperatures to germinate, so planting should occur slightly later than other legumes like beans. In Guangdong, it’s best to sow after the last frost. Plant the seeds in rows spaced 20–25 cm apart, placing 3–4 seeds per hole. Use approximately 2.5 kg of seed per acre, and make sure to apply ash around the planting holes.
Once the seedlings emerge, timely thinning and filling are essential. Leave 1–2 shoots per plant and eventually keep only one strong seedling. Fill in any gaps on cloudy days, transplanting seedlings with their soil clumps to reduce shock. During the early stages, regular weeding and loosening of the soil should be done. After each loosening, apply human excrement to promote healthy growth, known as the "emergence fertilizer." When the roots begin to expand in mid-June, another round of fertilization is needed. Water regularly during dry periods.
Pruning and staking are important for supporting the vines. When the plants reach about 30 cm in height, insert a bamboo stake into each hole and tie adjacent plants together to allow the vines to climb. Once the vines exceed 1 meter in height, top them to prevent unnecessary nutrient loss. Remove lateral branches and flowers promptly to maintain leaf coverage for photosynthesis, as these can negatively affect root development and ultimately reduce yield and quality.
Harvesting should be done about four months after sowing when the tubers have started to swell. However, yields at this stage may not be optimal. For maximum yield, it’s advisable to delay harvesting by an additional month. Yet, if harvested too late, the quality may decline, and in colder regions, the tubers risk freezing if not collected before the first frost. The average yield can reach over 3,000 kilograms per acre.
