August 11, 2009 — New research published this week highlights a significant connection between the activation of platelet microparticles and the clinical outcomes of patients with prostate cancer. Previous studies have long suggested that platelet activation plays a role in the spread of cancer, particularly in metastasis. Activated platelet microparticles (PMPs) release key growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), which are known to promote the formation of new blood vessels—a process critical to tumor progression.
In a recent study conducted by researchers in France, a prospective, non-randomized, single-center trial was carried out on 43 patients with hormone-resistant prostate cancer (HRPC). The aim was to evaluate how PMP levels might influence disease progression and patient survival. Patients with metastatic HRPC were treated with docetaxel and low-dose prednisone. Researchers measured PMPs using anti-CD41a monoclonal antibodies and analyzed VEGF and bFGF levels through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA).
The primary endpoint of the study focused on overall survival, and the results showed that patients with higher PMP levels had significantly shorter survival times compared to those with lower levels. Additionally, a strong statistical correlation was found between PMP counts and platelet levels, both of which were linked to poorer clinical outcomes. However, no significant association was observed between VEGF or bFGF levels and overall survival.
These findings suggest that PMPs and platelet activity could serve as important biomarkers for predicting the prognosis of HRPC patients. This insight may help guide future treatment strategies and improve patient management.
