Vegetable Prices in 2011: "Stagnation" and "Rising" Both Sides

In 2011, China's “big dishes” such as cabbage and potatoes were falling into the price drop, slow-moving sales, and selling difficulties, and vegetable farmers suffered heavy losses. At the same time, the price of brand-name vegetables such as Majiagou celery and Jiaozhou Chinese cabbage is several times or even several times higher than that of ordinary vegetables of the same type, and the supply is still in short supply. Many people in the industry believe that in the future, vegetable development should take the path of total guarantee and high quality and high prices. It is necessary to build a "garden of garden vegetables" to increase the income of farmers, and also to defend the "vegetable basket" so that citizens can eat cheap food.

"Large goods" selling unmarketable "premium dishes" expensive selling selling

Tangwang Town, Jinan City, Shandong Province is known as the “Home of Chinese Cabbage”. However, the reporter recently discovered in an interview with Tangwang Town that although the concentrated harvest season had already passed, many cabbages were not harvested in time, but were still “long” in the ground and frozen into “hail”.

"This year, cabbage is only a few cents a pound, and no one has yet acquired it. It can only be rotted in the ground." said Shih Cun Han, a vegetable farmer in Shiwang Village, Tangwang Town.

Since the beginning of this year, many vegetables in our country have fallen into the price drop, unsalable sales, and selling difficulties. In May, Jiangsu's cabbage, radish, and garlic sprouts were unmarketable; in October, prices of potatoes in Inner Mongolia and other places plummeted and sales in many production areas were difficult. Since the beginning of winter, prices of Chinese cabbage in Shandong and Henan Province plummeted, and many Chinese cabbages have not Picking, rotting in the ground...

In stark contrast to the slow sales of these “Road” vegetables, some “brand-name” vegetables are selling well. The reporter recently discovered in an interview in Pingdu City, Shandong Province that the Majiagou celery produced here not only sold at high prices but has been in short supply for several years.

“We have processed and packaged celery here to sell forty or forty pounds.” Hou Weiqiang, farmer of Majiadian Village, Liyuan Street, Pingdu, which grows “Majiagou celery”, said, “From our village in 2003, Since the large-scale development of the celery industry, the price of celery has gradually increased from the original two to three cents a catty, which is basically increasing by about 10% per year, and it is always in short supply.”

The reporter learned that similar to Majiagou celery, “brand-name” vegetables such as Jiaozhou cabbage, Zhangqiu scallions, and Weifang radishes are several times or even tens of times more expensive than similar ordinary vegetables, but supply still falls short of supply.

Several families are happy and worried

Many people in the industry pointed out that since the beginning of this year, the prices of many vegetables such as cabbage, ginger, garlic, etc. have fallen below the cost line, and “cooking farmers have been hurt” again.

The vegetable farmer Han Shiyi calculated a cost and profit account for the reporter: “The input for an acre of land includes seeds, fertilizers, water charges, electricity bills, etc., which add up to almost 1,500 yuan, while an acre of land can generally harvest 8,000 catties of cabbage. Overall, If a catty of cabbage does not sell for two cents, it basically does not make money. And this year, a pound of cabbage is only a few cents, selling one to lose one."

Many vegetable dealers have had a hard time. In the Beijing Xinfadi Wholesale Market, a vegetable dealer pointed to a car of vegetables and said: “This is the vegetable I just shipped from Shouguang, Shandong. If you can sell it early, you can earn up to 0.1 Yuan per pound, and you can make a profit. It is half of last year; if it is not finished tomorrow, the vegetables will change, and I will pay more than 400 yuan for this dish."
