Taro planting technology

In the early stages of cultivation, it's important to quickly establish a healthy root system. By late October, after the citron trees have shed their leaves, seedlings should be carefully raised. When raising the seedlings, ensure they develop strong lateral roots. The main root should measure at least 40 centimeters in length, while the lateral roots should be no less than 30 centimeters. The planting area should be prepared with rows spaced approximately 1 meter apart, and each row should be about 0.5 meters wide. Once planted, the scented citron should be placed in a shaded area for acclimation. The soil should be well-drained, regularly watered, and covered with grass mulch to prevent the roots from drying out. It's also essential to keep the root system covered and protected. After a few weeks, the seedlings will complete their dormancy period, typically within around 20 days. Next, prepare the greenhouse and the soil. In late October, construct the greenhouse structure and enrich the soil by adding high-quality manure or chicken droppings—around 15,000 kg per acre. Mix in 50 kg of compound fertilizer and 10 kg of urea. Then, till the soil to a depth of 30–40 cm to ensure even distribution. Level the ground and create beds that are 1.2–1.5 meters wide, oriented north-south. Each bed should be 30 cm wide and 15–20 cm high to promote good drainage and air circulation. For planting, the dormant seedlings should be transplanted into the greenhouse in mid-November. Plant them in a north-to-south direction based on their height. The roots should be planted 5–10 cm above the base of the stem, and the density should be around 100 plants per square meter. Immediately after planting, water thoroughly. If any seedlings show signs of root damage or lodging, adjust the soil and upright the plant. Then apply gibberellin to encourage early sprouting and growth. During the growing phase, maintaining proper temperature and humidity is crucial for high yields. Daytime temperatures should be kept around 25°C, while nighttime temperatures should not drop below 15°C. After covering the greenhouse, avoid intense sunlight during the day. At noon, use a shade cloth to reduce light intensity, and remove it when the sun weakens. On sunny days, cooling measures may be needed. During winter, make sure to remove the coverings in time and focus on insulation. If the temperature drops too low at night, use hot water bottles every 15–20 meters to increase both temperature and humidity inside the greenhouse. Throughout the entire growing season, maintaining high humidity is essential—never let the environment become dry. Under ideal conditions, the citrons should begin to sprout within about two weeks and grow to 20–30 cm in a month. At this point, they can be harvested and sold, typically around mid-December. After the first harvest, implement efficient irrigation and apply nitrogen fertilizer at a rate of about 10 kg per mu. A second crop can be harvested more than a month later, which usually falls in mid to late January. This timing allows for two harvests before the Spring Festival, accounting for about two-thirds of the total yield during the growing season, making it a highly profitable operation.
