Due to the long-term contact of litter with chicks, litter temperature during brooding is very important. The litter temperature should reach at least 29 degrees Celsius when the chick arrives. In addition, the litter must also be kept dry, and the wet litter is just like the evaporative cooling effect. Through field observations, we found that the preferred litter temperature for chicks was 32-33 degrees Celsius.
Lower litter temperature and brooding temperature also increase the incidence of ascites. When chicks get cold, they increase their metabolic function to maintain body temperature. The increase in metabolism requires the consumption of large amounts of oxygen, which in turn increases the workload of the right ventricle, which in turn leads to the development of ascites.
