Massachusetts Institute of Technology develops lower proton beam radiotherapy equipment

Release date: 2006-09-13

A breakthrough in cancer treatment is on the horizon, as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is working on a more affordable proton beam radiotherapy system. This development could significantly change how cancer patients are treated across the U.S. and beyond.

According to a recent report from Boston's "Global" newspaper, the New England Medical Center at Tufts University in Massachusetts is planning to install a new proton therapy device that costs a fraction of current systems. The facility has already submitted a proposal to state authorities for approval. This advancement could make life-saving treatments more accessible to patients who previously couldn't afford them.

Proton beam radiation therapy is widely regarded as one of the most advanced forms of cancer treatment due to its precision in targeting tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. However, the high cost of existing systems has limited their widespread use.

The technology being used by the medical center is developed by MIT, which claims the new system will be available commercially by 2008. Priced at just $19 million, this device is far more cost-effective than traditional proton therapy equipment, which can cost tens of millions of dollars.

Dr. David Wazer, an oncologist at the New England Medical Center, emphasized the importance of this innovation. “We are excited to be the first hospital in the state to implement this technology,” he said. “Proton therapy is the gold standard for many types of cancer, but the high cost has made it unattainable for most patients.”

The center plans to begin treating patients with the new system in 2009, aiming to treat 253 patients that year. By 2012, the number is expected to rise to 356, showing the potential impact of this groundbreaking technology.

MIT has partnered with local manufacturers to bring this innovative system to market, marking a major step forward in making advanced cancer care more affordable and accessible. As this technology becomes more widely adopted, it could revolutionize the future of radiation therapy and improve outcomes for countless patients around the world.
