Guangguangshu No.1 (Guangshu 95-1/Guangshu 88-70) is a newly developed sweet potato variety by the Crop Research Institute of the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It was officially recognized by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Agriculture in March 2005, marking its official entry into commercial cultivation.
This variety has a growth cycle of approximately 110 to 130 days during the summer season. Its foliage features purple-colored leaves with shallow lobes and purple veins, while the stems display a mix of green and purple hues. The plant grows in a semi-upright shape, and the tubers have attractive purple-red skin with rich purple flesh. The tubers are spindle-shaped and visually appealing, with excellent storage qualities and good sprouting ability.
In terms of quality, the dry matter content reaches 30.62%, with a flavor score of 81.3 out of 100. The starch content is 19.51%, and it contains 23.54 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams. This variety shows strong resistance to potato pod disease, making it a reliable choice for farmers.
It is well-suited for both irrigated and dry land cultivation in Guangdong during the summer and autumn seasons. In regional trials conducted from 2002 to 2003, the average yield of fresh tubers reached 2,375 kg per mu, which is 49.96% higher than that of the control variety, "Wide Potato 111." The dry tuber yield was 732.7 kg per mu, representing a 62.73% increase, showing significant improvement in productivity.
For optimal cultivation, it's recommended to use disease-free seedlings, planting between 3,000 to 3,500 plants per mu. The planting area should ideally be dry land with good irrigation facilities, preferably sandy soil to prevent waterlogging. During soil preparation, apply 1,500 kg of organic fertilizer per mu, along with 25 kg of phosphate fertilizer. Two to three weeks after planting, apply 8–10 kg of urea for fertilization. Around 50 days after planting, combine soil loosening with fertilization, applying 30 kg of potassium sulfate and 10 kg of urea or 20 kg of peanut bran. Regular monitoring and timely treatment of yam diseases are essential for successful cultivation.
