Guangguangshu No. 1 (Guangshu 95-1/Guangshu 88-70) is a newly developed sweet potato variety created by the Crop Research Institute of the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It was officially recognized by the Guangdong Provincial government in March 2005, marking its official entry into commercial cultivation.
This variety has a growing cycle of 110 to 130 days during the summer season. The plant features purple-tinted leaves with shallow lobes and purple veins, while the stems display a mix of green and purple hues. The plant grows in a semi-upright form, and the tubers have attractive purple-red skin with vibrant purple flesh. The shape of the tubers is spindle-like, making them visually appealing. They also have good storage qualities and strong sprouting ability. The dry matter content reaches 30.62%, with a flavor rating of 81.3 points. The starch content is 19.51%, and it contains 23.54 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams. However, it is somewhat susceptible to potato pod disease. This variety is well-suited for cultivation in both irrigated and dry land areas during the summer and autumn seasons.
In terms of yield performance, Guangguangshu No. 1 was tested in provincial trials from 2002 to 2003. The combined results showed an average fresh tuber yield of 2,375.0 kg per mu, which is 49.96% higher than the control variety "Wide Potato 111." The dry tuber yield reached 732.7 kg per mu, representing a significant increase of 62.73%. These results highlight its high productivity and potential for large-scale farming.
For optimal cultivation, it is recommended to use disease-free seedlings obtained from certified seed potatoes. Planting should be done at a density of 3,000 to 3,500 plants per mu. The planting area should ideally be well-drained dry land with good irrigation facilities, and sandy soil is preferred to prevent waterlogging. During soil preparation, apply 1,500 kg of organic fertilizer per mu, along with 25 kg of phosphate fertilizer. Two to three weeks after planting, add 8–10 kg of urea for fertilization. About 50 days after planting, combine soil loosening with fertilization by adding 30 kg of potassium sulfate and 10 kg of urea, or 20 kg of peanut bran. Careful attention should also be given to managing yam diseases to ensure healthy growth.
