Massachusetts Institute of Technology develops lower proton beam radiotherapy equipment

Release date: 2006-09-13

A breakthrough in cancer treatment is coming from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which has developed a more affordable proton beam radiotherapy system that could revolutionize cancer care. According to a recent report by Boston’s "Global," the New England Medical Center at Tufts University in Massachusetts is planning to build a proton therapy device that is significantly less expensive than current models. The hospital has already submitted a proposal to state authorities for approval.

Proton beam radiation therapy is widely regarded as one of the most advanced forms of cancer treatment due to its precision and reduced damage to surrounding healthy tissue. However, the high cost of traditional proton therapy systems has limited their availability to only a few medical centers around the world.

The technology being used by the New England Medical Center is being developed by MIT, and it is expected to be commercially available by 2008. This new system is priced at just $19 million, making it much more accessible compared to conventional proton therapy equipment, which can cost tens of millions of dollars. Dr. David Wazer, an oncologist at the center and head of radiation therapy, said that this will be the first such device in the state, marking a major step forward in the field.

He added that while proton therapy has long been the goal of many radiologists, the high costs have made it difficult to implement on a larger scale. With this new system, the center aims to begin treating patients in 2009, with an estimated 253 patients in the first year. By 2012, the number is expected to rise to 356.

MIT has partnered with a local manufacturer to bring this innovative technology to life, signaling a promising future for affordable and effective cancer treatment. This development could pave the way for more hospitals to adopt proton therapy, improving outcomes for patients across the country.
