Chamomile

Scientific Name: Anthemis tinctoria

Common Name: Dyers Chamomile, a member of the Compositae family, commonly known as chamomile.

Native to Europe, this hardy plant thrives in cool climates and can tolerate partial shade. It has strong adaptability, making it suitable for various growing conditions. The plant typically grows to a height of 30–60 cm and is known for its strong, pleasant aroma. Its stems are clustered, ribbed, and covered with white, woolly hairs. The leaves are deeply divided, usually with two lobes on each side.

The flower heads are bright golden yellow and bloom from June through October. After flowering, the plant produces four-sided achenes (seeds). There are several varieties available, including those with white, light yellow, and large flowers. These ornamental plants are popular for their long blooming period and attractive appearance.

Propagation is typically done by sowing seeds in spring. Seeds germinate best at temperatures between 18–22°C, with sprouts emerging within 7–10 days. The stems are slender and upright, producing dense clusters of flowers that make them ideal for use in flower beds, borders, pathways, rock gardens, or as cut flowers.

Among the most commonly cultivated ones are A. montana (also known as German chamomile) and A. nobilis (Roman chamomile), both of which are valued for their fragrance and beauty.
