Mane Hill Plum (Figure)

Maneshan plum, also known as *Sorbaria*, is a genus belonging to the family Saxifragaceae. It comprises approximately 75 species globally, with 18 species and 12 varieties or variants found in China. These are deciduous shrubs that typically grow up to about 4 meters in height. They thrive in sunny locations and are known for their beautiful, fragrant white flowers, which are not only aesthetically pleasing but also attract pollinators. The blossoms resemble those of plum trees, which is why they are named "Maneshan" (meaning "plum-like"). In addition to their ornamental value, these plants have medicinal uses. The root bark is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine for its healing properties. Maneshan plum is widely distributed across several provinces in China, including Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan. It often grows in bushes on the southern slopes of mountains, where it coexists with other shrubs such as water ma sang, cone hydrangea, southern eel, mountain pepper, red fruit fishing rod, and wild duck eel. The key characteristics of Maneshan plum include its strong adaptability, allowing it to thrive in mountainous and hilly regions with good drought resistance. Seedlings begin to flower within 2 to 3 years, making it an excellent choice for ornamental gardens. Propagation is relatively easy, with pods ripening from late October to November. The seeds are small, with a thousand-seed weight of approximately 0.18 grams. After harvesting, they should be dried in a mesh bag or sealed in a plastic bag and stored in a cold room at around 5°C or in a refrigerator. They can then be sown in late spring. When sowing, mix the seeds with fine mountain ash and spread them evenly on the seedbed. Cover them with a 1 cm layer of straw, ensuring the soil is not visible. Within about 15 days, seedlings will emerge. It's best to remove the straw during cloudy weather or in the evening, and provide shade until the seedlings reach a height of 3 to 5 cm. Once temperatures drop below 30°C, the shade can be removed, and the seedlings can be exposed to more light. By the end of the first year, they can grow to 20–30 cm tall and are ready for transplanting after two years. This plant can also be propagated through cuttings, making it a versatile option for gardeners and horticulturists. Its combination of beauty, resilience, and ease of cultivation makes it a popular choice for both ornamental and medicinal purposes.
