Maneshan plum, scientifically known as *Sorbaria* (family Saxifragaceae), is a genus comprising approximately 75 species worldwide. In China, there are 18 species and 12 varieties or variants. These deciduous shrubs typically grow up to 4 meters in height and thrive in sunny conditions. The white flowers are not only beautiful but also fragrant, making them highly ornamental. They usually bloom from May to June, with four to five petals that resemble those of plum blossoms, which inspired their common name.
Beyond their aesthetic value, the root bark of Maneshan plum has medicinal uses. This plant is commonly found in provinces such as Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan, often growing in bushes on the Yangpo Mountain. It is frequently associated with other shrubs like *Hydrangea paniculata*, *Rhus chinensis*, *Smilax china*, *Lycium chinense*, *Berberis thunbergii*, and *Dioscorea bulbifera*.
The key features of Maneshan plum include its strong adaptability, allowing it to grow in mountainous and hilly regions with high drought resistance. Seedlings begin to flower within 2-3 years, offering quick ornamental results. Propagation is straightforward: pods mature between late October and November, producing small seeds weighing about 0.18 grams per thousand. After harvesting, seeds should be dried in a paper bag or sealed in a plastic bag and stored in a cold room at 5°C or in a refrigerator. They can be sown in late spring.
For optimal germination, mix the seeds with fine mountain ash on the seedbed and cover them with a 1 cm layer of straw. Within 15 days, seedlings will emerge. It's best to remove the straw during cloudy weather or in the evening, and provide shade until the seedlings reach 3-5 cm in height. Once temperatures drop below 30°C, the shade can be removed, and light exposure can be increased. Annual seedlings typically grow to 20-30 cm and can be transplanted after two years.
