Canadian scientific research finds that sending text messages often results in decreased language skills

People have always believed that "SMS encourages unrestrained language", but the latest research found that this statement is not reliable. According to a recent report by the “Psychological Center Network” of the United States, a recent Canadian linguistic study shows that old texting can lead to a decline in language skills and it is more difficult to accept new vocabulary.

Researchers at the University of Calgary, Canada, surveyed college students and covered reading habits, including text messaging. Afterwards, the researchers showed a group of vocabulary to the participating college students, including both real words and invented words. It was found that mobile phone text messages have a negative impact on people's language ability, especially in terms of understanding and accepting vocabulary. Researchers say that people who text frequently respond to new vocabulary more slowly than people who read more traditional print media such as books, magazines, and newspapers.

The new research director, Joan Lee, said that people accept more vocabulary because they can better understand the meaning of the vocabulary or have a "tolerant" attitude toward vocabulary that they do not know. The new survey found that the more college students send text messages, the easier it is for them to reject more vocabulary or to be reluctant to admit the possibility that these vocabularies belong to real vocabulary.

The researchers analyzed that traditional print media can show people the diversity and creativity of the language. However, the verbal or vernacular text messages sent by young people cannot do this. Reading helps to improve the flexibility of language use and tolerance of different vocabulary. It also helps improve readers' ability to "decipher" new vocabulary or very vocabulary.

Researchers believe that the reason why college students who send text messages are more likely to reject a lot of vocabulary is that SMS is related to rigid language constraints. Another big reason is that because the vocabularies that the text writer is in contact with are relatively small, they are unfamiliar with many vocabulary words and find it harder to accept them.
