The International Thalassemia Association held a TIF (International Thalassemia Association) thalassemia prevention and treatment seminar in Nanning, Guangxi on the 7th. Many participating experts from all over the world believe that thalassemia has become a curable disease in the world after many years of research and treatment practice in the medical world.
Panos Englezos, president of the International Thalassemia Association, said: “The treatment of thalassemia is a major global problem. TIF has been actively involved in the global prevention and treatment of thalassemia. It has been proven that thalassemia is under current conditions. It is completely preventable; thalassemia is no longer an incurable disease, and the lives of patients can be saved through systematic treatment. Moreover, experts all over the world need to work together to help thalassemia patients improve the quality of life."
In China, the prevention and treatment of thalassemia is also receiving more and more attention. In Guangxi, where the incidence of thalassemia is highest, the incidence is around 20%. In 2010, Guangxi launched a plan to prevent and treat thalassemia, and invested in scientific research, genetic screening, and diagnosis. Li Guojian, director of the Health Department of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, said: "We will strengthen the knowledge and education on thalassemia prevention and control, access to knowledge of thalassemia into middle school textbooks, increase awareness, establish a network of thalassemia prevention and treatment technologies, and strengthen the technical team for the prevention and treatment of thalassemia. Comprehensively build a network for the prevention and treatment of thalassemia, with the goal of achieving a 50% reduction in the birth rate of children with severe thalassemia by 2015."
According to the World Health Organization and the International Thalassaemia Association, approximately 7% of the world's population carries the thalassemia gene, and 500,000 newborn thalassemia newborns are born each year. This is a major problem that has a great impact on families and society and poses a serious threat to human health and population quality.
