Hippeastrum hybridum has become one of the most popular globe flowers in recent years, capturing the attention of both gardeners and flower enthusiasts. With around 20 varieties available on the market, a single bulb can be sold for 30 to 40 yuan, making it a profitable crop with an annual yield of 200 to 300 yuan per pot. Among these, the large-flowered Zhudinghong variety stands out, featuring double blossoms with a diameter of up to 20 cm. This high-end potted plant is particularly favored in economically developed regions. However, the production of bulbs still largely depends on imports.
Since the 1990s, Suzhou Agricultural Vocational and Technical College has been actively involved in breeding new varieties of Zhudinghong and researching cultivation techniques. The college has introduced over 30 large-flowered varieties from the Netherlands and conducted extensive crossbreeding. As a result, more than 20,000 flowering plants have been produced from the hybrid offspring. From these, six varieties with excellent overall characteristics have been selected and named: "White Peacock," "Spring Peach," "Guardian," "Fire King Kong," "Smiling Face," and "Xi Shi." These varieties are now being propagated through asexual reproduction and widely promoted.
The large-flowered Zhudinghong prefers a semi-shady environment and thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. It requires well-drained, humus-rich soil and regular fertilization. During the growing season, which lasts from April to September, it should be fertilized once a week. Flowering typically lasts 5 to 6 months. In summer, it should be placed in a cool and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. After August, a fertilizer application every 10 to 15 days helps promote leaf and bulb development. The main period for flower bud differentiation occurs between August and October, during which time watering should be moderate, and phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be added to support healthy growth.
One common issue in the cultivation of Hippeastrum hybridum is the occurrence of reddish-brown spot disease. This fungal infection affects leaves, flower stems, buds, and bulbs, causing round or spindle-shaped brown spots that may expand into irregular patches. In the early stages, affected leaves should be removed and treated with a 1000-fold solution of tetromycin, or a 500 to 600-fold solution of chlorothalonil, or a 600-fold solution of carbendazim.
"White Peacock" features pure white flowers with 11 petals, each reaching a diameter of 18 cm, and two small flowers. The plant grows to about 25 cm tall and is known for its strong resistance. Due to the rarity of white-flowered varieties, this one is especially valuable.
"Spring Peach" showcases red and white mixed flowers, with red edges and a green center. It has 11 petals, a diameter of 16 cm, and four small flowers. Standing at 30 cm tall, it produces two daughter bulbs, offering high ornamental value and strong disease resistance.
"Guardian" presents red flowers with 15 double petals, a diameter of 18 cm, and two small flowers. It reaches a height of 30 cm and is admired for its elegant appearance, aligning with traditional Eastern aesthetic preferences.
"Fire King" features red, single-petaled flowers with six petals, a diameter of 18 cm, and four small flowers. The plant is only 15 cm tall, making it unique, easy to propagate, and ideal for mass production.
"Smiling Face" boasts bright red flowers with white stripes. It has 18 double petals, a crown diameter of 16 cm, and three small flowers. Its soft colors make it well-suited for indoor potted plants.
"Xi Shi" displays white flowers with red accents, featuring 18 double petals, a diameter of 20 cm, and five small flowers. Growing to 34 cm tall, it is highly ornamental and exhibits excellent traits and strong resistance. Its beautiful color combination makes it a top choice for decorative purposes.
