Before the Fuji apple harvest, many growers were convinced that the time was near and often experienced a sense of helplessness. However, proper late-stage management is just as crucial as earlier care. Here are some practical post-harvest management tips for Fuji apple producers to consider. First, pest control and leaf protection should not be overlooked. Every year, some orchards neglect late-season pest management, leading to infestations by pests like the golden moth and pear silk worm. This results in excessive leaf drop, which negatively impacts both yield and fruit quality. It's essential to continue with regular pest monitoring and apply eco-friendly pesticides every 15–20 days based on the specific pest situation. Second, ensuring adequate light exposure plays a key role in improving fruit color and sugar content. From late September to late October, Fuji apples go through a critical period of color development and sugar accumulation. The amount of light reaching the fruit directly affects its color intensity and sweetness, so it’s important to manage the canopy properly. To achieve this: 1. Prune the tree regularly by removing sticky, diseased, or weak branches to open up the canopy and allow more sunlight to reach the fruits. 2. Remove the fruit bags 20–30 days before harvest. Choose a sunny, windless day between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Start by taking off the outer bag first, then remove the inner bag 3–5 days later. 3. Consider using reflective films at the end of September after the bags are removed, especially in high-quality orchards. This helps improve color development on the lower and inner parts of the tree. 4. Gently remove leaves around the fruit to enhance coloration. Begin by picking the leaves closest to the fruit and gradually remove those blocking sunlight at the base of the branches. Do not remove more than 30% of the total leaves. After about two weeks, when the fruit is fully colored on the sunny side, carefully turn the fruit and secure it with transparent tape. This is best done between noon and 5 p.m. 5. In the evenings, spray the leaves with fresh water from 6 p.m. every day for 2–3 days starting mid-September. This helps increase the temperature difference between day and night, which enhances sugar accumulation. By following these steps, growers can significantly improve the quality and market value of their Fuji apples. Proper attention during the final stages of growth can make all the difference in the final product.
