Stainless steel self-priming pump principle

A self-priming centrifugal pump is a type of pump that can draw water from a source without the need to manually fill the suction line before starting. This makes it highly convenient for applications where the pump may not always be fully submerged or where the suction line is not initially filled with water. There are various types of self-priming pumps, and one common type is the externally-mixed self-priming pump. Before operation, the pump is either pre-filled with water or designed to retain water internally. Once the motor is turned on, the impeller spins rapidly, creating a centrifugal force that pushes water from the impeller channels toward the volute. As this happens, a vacuum is formed at the inlet, allowing water to enter through the suction pipe while air is drawn into the pump as well. The air from the suction line moves through the impeller channels and exits at the outer edge. Meanwhile, the water discharged into the gas-water separation chamber by the impeller flows back toward the impeller’s outer edge via left and right return holes. The water from the left return hole is guided back into the impeller channel due to pressure and gravity, where it is mixed with the incoming air. This mixture is then sent to the volute, where it continues to be crushed and stirred, forming a gas-water mixture. As the liquid moves through the volute, it collides with the cascading vanes, further mixing with air and preventing separation. At the outlet of the volute, a tongue-like structure helps separate the gas from the liquid, directing the gas out through the discharge pipe. The remaining water continues to circulate through the return holes, re-entering the impeller and mixing again with the air from the suction line. This cycle repeats continuously, gradually removing air from the suction line and allowing water to flow into the pump. Over time, the system becomes fully primed, enabling efficient pumping of liquid. Self-priming pumps are widely used in sewage systems, oil transfer, chemical handling, and other industrial applications where reliable and automatic priming is essential.
