A self-priming centrifugal pump is a type of pump that can draw water from a source without requiring the suction line to be manually filled with water before starting. This makes it highly efficient and convenient for applications where priming is challenging or time-consuming.
There are various types of self-priming pumps, and one common design is the externally mixed self-priming pump. Before operation, the pump is either pre-filled with water or contains it internally. Once started, the high-speed rotation of the impeller causes water in the impeller channels to move toward the volute. This creates a vacuum at the inlet, which allows atmospheric pressure to push water into the pump through the suction pipe.
At the same time, air from the suction line enters the pump and is directed to the outer edge of the impeller via the channels. The water discharged by the impeller into the gas-water separation chamber flows back to the impeller’s outer edge through left and right return holes. Water from the left return hole is guided back into the impeller channel due to pressure differences and gravity, where it is broken up by the rotating impeller and mixed with the incoming air. This mixture is then sent to the volute.
As the liquid moves through the volute, it collides with the cascading structure and is continuously crushed by the impeller. This process helps mix the air and water thoroughly, preventing them from separating. At the outlet of the volute, a tongue separates the gas-water mixture, directing it into the separation chamber through a short tube.
In the separation chamber, the air is released through the outlet pipe, while the water continues to flow back to the impeller via the left and right return holes. It mixes again with the air from the suction line, and this cycle repeats until all the air in the suction line is removed, allowing water to fully enter the pump. This completes the self-priming process.
Self-priming pumps are widely used in sewage systems, oil transfer, chemical processing, and other industrial applications. They include various types such as diaphragm pumps, screw pumps, gear pumps, and corrosion-resistant or acid-resistant pumps, each designed for specific operating conditions.
