Aliyah

Ever since Aliyah was born, I’ve been searching for pieces of myself in her. It started when people would say, "She's her daddy's daughter," pointing out how much she looks like him. But every time she flashes one of those impish smiles or makes that adorable pout, I can't help but feel proud of being her mom. Those big hazel eyes of hers—they're definitely all mine.

Yesterday, we were having one of our little pretend play sessions. She brought out her Veterinarian Barbie, who was apparently on a mission to save the day. They set off on this grand adventure in a boat made from her sparkly silver sandal, sailing across a grassy ocean that stretched out on our yellow beach towel. Her storytelling is always so vivid—arms flailing as she described the scene, her voice rising with excitement. And then came the dramatic twist: "A huge wave SPLASHED into the air, drenching the whole boat!" By the end, she was laughing so hard, tears streaming down her cheeks, and even I couldn’t help but chuckle at her flair for the theatrical. Both my husband and I earned points for that one—it seems like drama runs in the family!

But here’s where things get interesting: Aliyah has this habit of creating new words. Yesterday, during our game, she called the kitten’s makeshift bed a "furrific cushion." It’s pure creativity, and it’s something I recognize in myself too. The way I sometimes come up with quirky phrases—I guess it’s a trait I passed along without even realizing it. That one’s all me!

I love watching her grow and seeing bits of myself in her. Whether it’s her imagination or her dramatic flair, there’s so much of both of us in her. It’s funny how motherhood makes you reflect on who you are and what you bring to the table. Turns out, I’m not just her mom—I’m also her biggest fan.
