Under normal conditions, Boer goat rams can be introduced to breeding at around 10 months of age. However, in the early stages, it's important not to collect more than twice a week to avoid overexertion. By the time they reach one year old, they can officially begin sperm collection, typically 4 times per week. If the rams are in good health and the feeding conditions are optimal, the frequency can be slightly increased. Rams older than two years can be collected once a day or twice with at least 30 minutes between each session, but no more than three times daily. It is crucial to keep detailed records of how many times each ram is used and the pregnancy rates of the ewes to ensure efficient management and maximize each ram’s performance.
To maintain strong, energetic rams with high libido and quality semen, proper breeding and management practices must be followed. This helps improve the overall utilization rate and extends their productive lifespan. A well-balanced diet is essential—high in nutrients, including adequate protein, vitamins, and minerals, and easy to digest with good palatability. During non-breeding periods, rams should be fed high-quality hay regularly, along with small amounts of fresh green feed. Each adult ram should receive about 0.5 kg of full-price compound feed daily. During the breeding season, this amount increases to 0.8 kg per day, and adding 1–2 raw eggs can further enhance semen quality.
Rams should be kept individually and fed properly. Boer goats prefer dry environments, so using wooden slatted floors is ideal. Allowing them to graze for 4–6 hours daily, while letting them eat freely, helps maintain their body condition, boosts disease resistance, and enhances sexual drive, which in turn improves sperm viability. If the ram shows normal libido and ejaculation but the fertility success rate remains low, it may indicate poor semen quality or low survival rate. In such cases, supplementing with feed rich in selenium and zinc could be beneficial.
The concentrate feed should be adjusted based on the ram’s body condition, while roughage should be controlled appropriately. Regular health checks are necessary to detect and treat any illnesses promptly. Keeping rams healthy and well-managed ensures better reproductive performance and long-term productivity.
