Boer goat ram utilization and rearing

Under normal conditions, Boer goat rams can be bred or mated properly at around 10 months of age. During the initial breeding phase, it's important not to collect more than two times per week to avoid overexertion. By the time they reach one year old, they can officially begin sperm collection, typically four times a week. If the rams are in good health and fed well, the frequency can be increased slightly. Rams older than two years can be collected once daily or twice with at least 30 minutes between sessions, but no more than three times per day. It's essential to keep detailed records of how many times each ram is used and the pregnancy rates of the ewes, so adjustments can be made based on individual performance, ensuring maximum efficiency from each ram. To maintain strong, energetic, and sexually active rams with high-quality semen, proper care and management are crucial. This helps improve their overall utilization and extends their productive lifespan. The diet for breeding rams should be rich in nutrients, including high-quality protein, vitamins, and minerals, while being easy to digest and palatable. During non-breeding periods, they should be given regular amounts of quality hay and some fresh green feed daily. Adult rams should receive about 0.5 kg of complete compound feed per day. During the breeding season, this amount increases to 0.8 kg, and feeding 1–2 raw eggs daily is recommended. Rams should be kept individually and fed primarily. Boer goats prefer dry environments, so using wooden slatted floors is ideal. Allowing them to graze for 4–6 hours a day helps maintain their body condition, boosts immunity, and enhances libido, which positively affects sperm quality and survival. If a ram shows normal sexual behavior but the fertility rate remains low, it may indicate poor sperm quality or survival. In such cases, supplementing with feed containing selenium, zinc, and other trace elements could help. The concentrate feed should be adjusted according to the ram’s body condition, while roughage should be carefully managed. Regular health monitoring is essential, and any signs of illness must be addressed promptly to ensure optimal performance.
