The selection of the seedbed is crucial for successful propagation. It should be located in a sunny area with good ventilation, close to a water source, on elevated ground with smooth drainage and easy access for transportation. The cutting medium can consist of expanded perlite mixed with ash. The seedbed itself is constructed using bricks, forming a rectangular structure approximately 40-50 cm in height. The length and width can be adjusted based on the specific needs. A drainage hole is left between the seedbed and the surrounding soil, and a drainage ditch is dug around it to prevent waterlogging. A tap water pipe is installed every 40 cm inside the seedbed, equipped with a sprinkler system. For the base of the seedling mattress, pebbles are placed first, followed by a 5 cm layer of coarse sand, then 15-20 cm of yellow sand, and finally a layer of puffed perlite or ash for optimal root development.Second, cutting preparation
(1) Cutting Selection: Ideal cuttings are semi-woody, with internodes measuring 3-4 cm, rich in nutrients, free from pests and diseases, and typically 3-5 shoots per cutting, with a maximum length of 20 cm. (2) Cutting Cultivation: If a large number of semi-woody cuttings are needed, some branches can be pruned during winter for the first year, while more mature branches are selected in the second year. (3) Cutting Technique: When making cuts, trim 0.5-1 cm above the lower bud, preferably at a 45-degree angle. The upper cut should be made 1.5 cm above the top bud. After cutting, immerse the cuttings in a disinfectant solution made from carbendazim and tetromycin for one hour to sterilize them. (4) Planting Cuttings: The best time to take cuttings is from early May to early August. Before inserting into the medium, apply a rooting hormone such as ABT or a prepared solution to the bottom of the cuttings. Insert them into the perlite or ash up to 8-10 cm deep, ensuring that the gaps between the cuttings and the substrate are filled properly.Third, post-cutting seedbed management
(1) Weeding: Regularly remove weeds from the perlite or ash to maintain a clean environment. (2) Temperature Control: During hot seasons, cover the seedbed with shade nets to reduce heat stress and water loss. At midday, when sunlight is strongest, spray water immediately to cool the cuttings. (3) Humidity Management: Install a timer-controlled irrigation system after setting up the water pipes. Adjust the watering schedule based on environmental conditions. Use nozzles that produce fine mist rather than droplets. Initially, spray every 3-4 minutes for 30-50 seconds, then increase the interval to 5-6 minutes with longer spray times of 70-80 seconds. Keep the leaves slightly moist without dripping. By day 10, a callus will form at the base of the cuttings. By days 30-40, the callus will heal and develop into new roots, which will grow to 5-6 cm in about 50-60 days. At this stage, foliar fertilizers can be applied. Watering frequency can be adjusted to once every 3 minutes, with two sprays per day 10 days before transplanting, each lasting 5 minutes. Before transplanting, prepare the planting bed by deeply loosening and leveling the top 15 cm of soil to create a 60 cm wide surface suitable for sorghum. Dig planting holes that are slightly larger than the root system and water them thoroughly. Place shade nets over the transplanted area to protect the young plants. As soon as the soil starts to crack, water it promptly and remove any weeds. Within 15-20 days after planting, apply diluted manure water appropriately, and ensure proper irrigation while draining excess water from the field.
