Use plants to detect mines?

Since the Second World War, some local wars in the world have cropped up. Landmines have become cheap weapons that both parties to the conflict must use. However, the landmines are easy to embed, and I do not know how many people will die if they are not killed. Now Danish scientists have changed the genes of a plant so that it can find buried mines with its help. If there are mines in the nearby soil, the genetically modified mustard will turn from green to red, and then it will be possible to observe the color change of the plant without any risk by using an airplane to conduct airborne exploration. It is as safe as air seeding. .

The study was completed by scholars from the Danish Aresa Biotechnology Company and scientists from the Institute of Molecular Biology at the University of Copenhagen. This male mustard contains a gene that normally does not function until autumn and leaves the plant leaves bright red. Scientists have added a gene to the plant so that this discoloration gene will work when it encounters carbon dioxide. Most traditional explosives release a small amount of carbon dioxide. The male mustard can perceive the presence of this gas through the roots.

The experiments conducted by the Danish military on such mine-indicating plants in genetic experiments have confirmed their effectiveness. Three to five weeks after a mine is confirmed, the color of the genetically modified mustard will change. Scientists have further changed the genetics of the plant. They removed an important growth gene, so that the male mustard could no longer reproduce on its own, but only when a special chemical fertilizer was used. Its purpose is to reduce the fears of genetic technology opponents.

Despite this, Greenpeace still criticized the fact that planting male mustard plants is fundamentally wrong and dangerous. There should be other more effective methods of detecting mines.

Some experts also pointed out that the roots of the mustard seedlings are shallow in the soil, so this method can only find land mines near the surface. It is unclear whether such native European mustard can breed under the climatic conditions of other countries.
