There are new tricks

The process of feeding and fasting begins with the development of limbs in cockroaches, which are then placed in a pool as bait. Every day and night, for 12 hours, we observe the area where dragonflies are active, especially on the water surface. At night, we use incandescent lights to attract various flying insects, allowing the dragonflies to feed. To maintain their health and avoid excessive fat accumulation, we stop the light trapping for one night every week, interrupting their feeding. This helps reduce body fat, promote skeletal growth, and support the development of the gonads. From 18 to 30 months of age, we extend this practice by stopping the light traps every 10 days for two nights. Then, we suddenly provide an abundant food supply followed by two days and nights of fasting. This method prevents the gonads from being overloaded with fat, which could delay spawning or cause infertility. Before and after reaching 18 months of age, we introduce a floating feeding table made of a 0.5-meter square wooden board (1 cm thick) that floats on the water surface. We place bait such as insects on the board, allowing cormorants to climb up and catch the food. They can jump into the water, push the board, chase, and climb, improving their ability to adapt to both aquatic and terrestrial environments. The floating board does not take up land, doesn’t reduce the water volume, and provides shade, offering a sense of security. This helps strengthen the dragonfly’s survival abilities. In the late stage, we plant broad-leaved vegetables in loquat areas to control pests and produce green vegetables. During the day, the leaves of these vegetables are used to provide shade. From 30 to 36 months of age, we switch to black light traps at night, encouraging the dragonflies to live in darkness. As nocturnal creatures, they are more comfortable eating, growing, mating, and laying eggs in the dark, which accelerates the development of their phlegm and gonads. Artificial assistance is also used to enhance physiological and reproductive development. Once the limbs begin to grow, molting occurs, a natural process similar to traditional Chinese medicine practices. In nature, the skin increases about three times per year, once per molt. Before 30 months, molting aligns with overall growth. After 30 months, it synchronizes with gonadal development. Through artificial methods, we can increase molting frequency to over 14 times a year, boosting physiological and reproductive growth. With proper nutrition, these individuals can lay eggs approximately five months earlier than others.
