I don't know how else to put it—they're just such a bummer. In our family, goodbyes feel almost routine. Every few months, it's like clockwork: another goodbye to the man who’s been our rock, our anchor, our everything. Just the thought of it feels heavy, even now, as I type this. I'd like to say I’ve grown numb to it, but that wouldn’t be entirely honest. Some days, it still hits me hard, like a wave crashing over me when I least expect it.
Of course, I understand that his work is important. It keeps food on the table, roofs over our heads, and so much more. Still, there’s no denying that those moments—when he walks out the door—are tough. A quick wave, a lingering hug, and then silence. That’s what we’re left with for weeks at a time. Sure, there are emails here and there, maybe a video call once every couple of weeks. But it’s never enough, not really. The connection just isn’t the same.
Life has its fair share of goodbyes for everyone, I know that. Whether it’s a friend moving away, a loved one passing, or even just a temporary separation, we all face them. But for us, they seem to come around more frequently. And while I try to focus on the “hello†that waits at the end, it’s not always easy. Sometimes, I just need a moment—or two—to sit with the sadness before I can move forward.
After a bit of self-pity and a little too much chocolate (hey, I’m only human), I remind myself that this isn’t forever. There will be another hello, another reunion. And until then, I’ll take it one day at a time. It’s not perfect, but it’s what works for us.
So, if you’re reading this and you’re going through something similar, know that you’re not alone. Goodbyes are hard, no matter how many times you’ve experienced them. Take care of yourself, lean on your support system, and remember that brighter days are ahead.
What about you? How do you handle goodbyes in your own life?
