Xinjiang's unique natural conditions make it an ideal region for producing high-quality hybrid maize seeds. Hybrid corn seed production has evolved into a key industry in the area, and in some regions, it has become a cornerstone of local agriculture. However, in recent years, there have been frequent cases of impure hybrid corn seeds, which have significantly damaged the reputation of Xinjiang as a seed production base and affected the yield potential of premium varieties. This issue has drawn serious attention from seed management authorities, producers, and relevant departments. The challenge now is how to effectively improve the quality of hybrid corn seeds.
First, selecting high-quality inbred lines is essential for ensuring the purity of hybrid corn seeds. The original inbred parent seeds must strictly follow the "three-reserve system" or "two-reserve system" standards. These seeds should be properly stored and used in batches. The purity of the parent seeds needs to be above 99%, the coating agent coverage over 98%, and the germination rate at least 85%. A responsible person should oversee the original seed production, and detailed records should be maintained. It is also recommended to coat the seeds with a protective agent to control underground pests effectively.
Corn is a cross-pollinated crop, with a natural hybridization rate exceeding 95%, making it highly susceptible to contamination. Therefore, it is crucial to implement proper isolation methods based on the local environment. The spatial isolation distance should be at least 500 meters to ensure safe separation. If there are natural barriers such as tall crops or hills, the isolation zone can be slightly reduced. However, if there are large areas of other corn nearby, the isolation distance should be increased. Time isolation is also important, typically lasting more than 40 days. Additionally, beekeeping within a 4-kilometer radius of the farm should be prohibited to avoid pollination interference.
Third, strict removal of impurities is necessary throughout the growing process. Any plants that do not display the typical traits of the parent lines should be completely eliminated, as they may be hybrids. Three stages of weeding are generally recommended: seedling stage, tasseling, and harvesting. During the seedling stage, plants with abnormal leaf shape, color, or structure should be removed. At the tasseling stage, any male flowers that appear early or show irregular characteristics should be eliminated. Finally, before harvest, each ear should be carefully selected based on traits like ear shape, kernel type, color, and cob color to ensure seed purity meets regulatory standards.
Fourth, timely and thorough emasculation of the male parent is critical for maintaining seed purity. The male tassels should be removed before the female tassels begin to shed pollen. When performing emasculation, it is important to remove the tassels along with one or two leaves to prevent self-pollination. This helps increase seed purity and conserves plant nutrients, promoting better ear development and higher seed set. Removed tassels should be buried or disposed of properly to avoid contamination.
Finally, after pollination is complete, the male plants should be promptly removed. This not only reduces water and nutrient consumption but also improves air circulation and light exposure for the female plants, enhancing their yield potential. More importantly, it prevents cross-contamination during harvest, ensuring the purity of the final hybrid seed product.
By implementing these measures, Xinjiang can maintain its reputation as a leading producer of high-quality hybrid maize seeds and continue to support sustainable agricultural growth.
