How to plant a good summer spinach

First, choose heat-resistant and disease-resistant varieties such as round-leaf or large-leaf spinach that germinate easily. Soak the seeds in water for 12 to 24 hours, then place them at a low temperature of 2°C to 4°C to promote germination. Alternatively, after soaking, spread the seeds in a cool, shaded area of the room for germination. Make sure to rinse the seeds with clean water again to remove any mucus, which can cause mold. Keep turning the seeds regularly and maintain moisture. Germination usually takes about 4 to 5 days before sowing.

Second, the best time for sowing is typically between mid-May and early June, during the high-temperature season. Increase the seeding rate slightly to around 15 kg per mu. To ensure continuous growth and extended harvest periods, you can mix two types of pre-soaked seeds with one dry seed when sowing. Choose well-drained sandy loam soil and prepare it thoroughly by plowing and adding sufficient base fertilizer—about 1500 to 2000 kg of fully decomposed organic manure per acre. The day before sowing, dig furrows and level the bed. Water thoroughly before planting, and continue watering in the morning and evening until the seeds emerge.

Third, manage the spinach carefully before the White Dew season. After sowing, it’s best to cover the soil with a layer of mulch or straw to retain moisture and regulate temperature. If possible, set up temporary shade structures and remove them once the plants have emerged. During the growing period and after each harvest, apply well-decomposed manure tea in small amounts, ensuring it is evenly distributed into the soil to keep it consistently moist. In the rainy season, focus on cooling the plants and preventing diseases by ensuring good drainage and proper ventilation.

By following these steps, you can significantly improve the success rate of your spinach cultivation, even under challenging weather conditions. Proper seed selection, timely sowing, and consistent care are key to achieving a healthy and productive crop. Whether you're a seasoned farmer or just starting out, attention to detail in each stage of the process will make a big difference in the quality and yield of your spinach.
