How to identify the hunger for fish

In fish farming, many farmers often express dissatisfaction with their pond-raised fish production and the overall economic returns. This is typically due to improper feeding practices, such as not accurately determining the right amount of feed or neglecting the proper feeding techniques. To effectively assess whether the fish are hungry or well-fed, farmers should pay close attention to several key indicators. First, observe how quickly the fish consume the feed. If the feed is completely eaten within less than 2 hours, it may indicate that the quantity is insufficient. On the other hand, if the fish continue to linger near the feeding area even after the food is gone and show no interest in dispersing, this suggests they are still not fully satisfied. Conversely, if the fish scatter immediately after eating and there's leftover bait, it means the feeding amount can be slightly reduced. Second, during routine pond inspections, if the water surface remains unusually calm, but the fish are very active and show no signs of parasites on their bodies, this could signal hunger. For example, young fry or fingerlings swimming in tight groups around the pond edges often indicate a severe state of hunger. Third, regularly monitoring fish growth—typically once a month—is essential. If the fish fail to reach expected size standards or show significant size variation, it’s a sign that they may not be receiving enough food consistently. Fourth, in ponds where squids or similar species are raised, if the fish have large heads, thin tails, and appear weak or unable to swim properly, this is another clear sign of poor nutrition or starvation. Lastly, in carp ponds, if the water appears unusually muddy or yellowish (and this isn’t due to storms or floods), it may indicate that the carp are not being fed adequately. By carefully observing these signs and adjusting feeding strategies accordingly, fish farmers can significantly improve both the health of their fish and the profitability of their operations.
