Farm Machinery Storage "Four Preventions"

In order to extend the service life of farm equipment, it's essential to implement proper maintenance during the off-season. This includes following a set of "four preventions" to ensure machinery remains in good condition for the next farming season. After finishing work in the field, the first step is to thoroughly clean the machinery. Remove all dirt, leftover seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and crop residues from the working parts. If necessary, rinse with water or apply oil to protect metal components from rust. Next, pay attention to the lubricated parts. Clean them carefully and reapply lubricant as needed. For moving surfaces like plowshares, plow walls, seed openers, and spade blades, wipe them with oil afterward. Using protective stickers can help minimize exposure to air and moisture, reducing the risk of corrosion. High-precision tools should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Simpler tools such as plows, rakes, and hoes can be kept outdoors but should be placed on elevated, dry ground away from direct sunlight. Covering them with a shelter or tarp is advisable. Any part that touches the ground should be supported by wood or bricks. Also, touch up any peeling paint to maintain protection against weathering. Wooden parts are prone to decay, cracking, and warping due to microbial activity, as well as exposure to rain, wind, and sun. To prevent this, coat the wood with paint and store it in a dry location. This helps preserve its structural integrity over time. Rubber and plastic components are vulnerable to aging caused by oxygen and ultraviolet light. Their elasticity may degrade or even break. When storing rubber parts, it’s best to apply hot paraffin oil to the surface. Keep them indoors on a shelf, covered with paper, in a dry and ventilated space—never in direct sunlight. For parts like springs, drive belts, long shanks, and tires, prolonged stress or improper storage can cause permanent deformation. Ensure proper support under the storage rack so that tires don’t bear weight. Loosen any tensioned springs and remove drive belts, storing them indoors. Parts like long knife bars should be laid flat or hung vertically to avoid bending. Tires and seeding tubes should be stored separately to prevent crushing or distortion. By following these steps, farmers can significantly extend the lifespan of their equipment and reduce the need for costly repairs or replacements. Proper seasonal maintenance is not just a task—it's an investment in the future of the farm.
