Control of Shallot Downy Mildew

The disease primarily affects the leaves, causing visible damage that starts when the seedlings have developed 5 to 6 leaves and reach a height of about 17 cm. At this stage, the plant becomes susceptible to long-term infection. The symptoms typically begin at the middle of the outer leaves or the leaf tips and then spread upward or downward. Infected areas are covered with grayish or brownish fungal layers, and the boundary between healthy and diseased tissue is not clearly defined. Over time, the affected area turns from yellow-green to grayish green and eventually dries out. In more severe cases, the central part of the leaves becomes infected, leading to wilting, drooping, or even death of the leaf. When the leaves are wet, they may rot, and after drying, the affected parts may shrink and twist. The disease often occurs alongside purple spot, making it more challenging to identify. To manage the disease effectively, several control measures should be taken. First, in early spring, ensure that seedlings (bulbs) are grown in disease-free plots and stored in dry conditions. Before planting, select only healthy bulbs and dry them thoroughly. Then, soak the seeds in a solution made by mixing 72% wettable powder of mildew (e.g., mancozeb) at 1000 times dilution or 58% radomeril WP at 1000 times, along with 72% agricultural streptomycin soluble powder at 4000 times dilution for 30–40 minutes. After soaking, allow the seeds to air dry before planting. Crop rotation is another essential practice. Avoid planting onions or garlic in the same area for 2–3 years. Choose high, well-drained sandy loam soil that is loose and easy to irrigate. Apply organic manure and increase potassium fertilizer to improve plant resistance. Maintain proper moisture levels in the field—keep it moist but avoid overwatering. At the early stages of the disease, immediately remove and destroy any central infected plants by deep burial or burning. Once the seedlings reach 15 cm in height, start spraying preventive treatments. You can use 72% mancozeb wettable powder diluted to 500 times or 64% oxathiapiprolin wettable powder at 500 times. Spray every 7–10 days. For early-stage infections, 58% landomycins WP at 500 times or 50% acetamiprid WP at 800–1000 times can also be used. Repeat applications as needed, up to 2–3 times, depending on the severity of the outbreak.
