In the Light of the Morning

It was still dark outside when she leaned over me, her voice tinged with the kind of excitement only kids can muster. "Mommy, do you remember what today is?" Even before I opened my eyes, I could feel the energy radiating off her. She was practically vibrating with anticipation. I smiled groggily, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep while she stood there, beaming and waiting for my response.

Today marked the beginning of a week-long art camp, something she'd been talking about for weeks now. But honestly, I'm not sure she had any idea what to expect. For a couple of days leading up to it, she kept asking if they would tell campfire stories—clearly channeling some fantasy about sitting around a roaring fire swapping tales. When I explained that this wasn't exactly a traditional camping trip but rather an art-focused program, her imagination took another turn entirely. "Is it like prison?" she asked, with a puzzled expression. "With chains and dungeons?"

I laughed, wondering where such wild ideas came from. Had we been watching too many adventure movies? Maybe it was time to switch things up and introduce her to some new genres. Either way, I reassured her that there wouldn't be any chains involved—and thankfully, she seemed satisfied with that answer.

Fast forward to later in the day, and she bounded back home after her first session, glowing from head to toe. Her cheeks were flushed, her hair slightly disheveled from practicing for the upcoming dance recital on Friday. She proudly showed me her damp swimsuit and towel, evidence of the outdoor activities she'd enjoyed under the summer sun. And best of all? She confirmed emphatically that there were absolutely NO chains.

As I watched her prance around the living room, reenacting moves she'd learned, I couldn't help but feel a wave of nostalgia wash over me. It struck me how quickly time passes, how rapidly my little girl is growing up. Here she was, ready to embrace new experiences without hesitation, while I found myself reflecting on the passage of years. Am I really getting older? Or am I just learning to let go?

Either way, seeing her so thrilled made it impossible not to smile. There's something magical about witnessing your child discover joy in something new. It reminds you of the beauty in simplicity, the power of creativity, and the importance of giving kids space to explore.

And maybe, just maybe, it makes you realize that sometimes, being "old" isn't so bad when it comes with moments like these.
