Scientific name: Fittonia verschaffeltii var. argyroneura
Family: Acanthaceae (Not Apricot family)
Species: Fittonia verschaffeltii
Reticulated grass is a vibrant, creeping, evergreen perennial plant known for its striking leaf patterns. There are three common varieties: red reticulated grass, white reticulated grass, and small-leaf white grass.
Origin: Native to Peru.
The white reticulated grass was introduced to Italy in 1984 and later brought to China after three years of trial planting, where it proved suitable as an ornamental foliage plant.
Morphological Characteristics:
White reticulated grass typically grows to about 20 cm in height. Each leaf is oval-shaped, with a papery texture and arranged opposite each other. The base of the leaves is blunt, while the stems, petioles, and veins on the back are densely covered with fine hairs. The surface of the leaves features a distinctive white network pattern, making it visually appealing.
This plant has strong vitality, often described as "living like a tiger." It's not just decorative—it thrives in warm, humid conditions. It’s important to avoid direct sunlight and ensure good air circulation.
Flowering:
In summer, this plant produces small inflorescences. Although not the main attraction, the flowers can be harvested through cuttings. If water and light conditions are insufficient, some growth hormones may help promote healthy development.
Leaf Texture:
The top of the leaves is covered with soft, fine hairs, giving it a velvety touch. This makes it different from other plants like white acacia, which have a more rigid texture.
Growth Habits:
White reticulated grass prefers shaded areas in high-temperature environments. Ideal growing temperature ranges from 25–30°C, and winter temperatures should stay above 12°C. It requires well-draining soil with good aeration.
When cultivating, avoid placing it under direct sunlight and ensure proper ventilation. It thrives in warmth but cannot tolerate temperatures below 15°C. Since the leaves are delicate, keep them clean and avoid touching the pot or fertilizer directly. It benefits from organic to inorganic liquid fertilizers. The soil must be well-drained. During the growing season, regular pruning helps maintain a compact shape. If the stems are trained, hanging pots can be created.
Comparison with Cold-Water Plants:
Both white reticulated grass and cold-water plants are evergreen perennials, but they belong to different families—white reticulated grass is part of the Acanthaceae family, while cold-water plants belong to the Brassicaceae family. Both thrive in high humidity and semi-shaded environments, making them ideal for indoor decoration. However, white reticulated grass prefers warmer temperatures (20–30°C), and it struggles in cold conditions, especially when temperatures drop below 15°C. Its leaves are thin, and its roots are dense, making it sensitive to drought and overwatering. In contrast, cold-water plants are more cold-resistant, requiring only slightly above 5°C during winter. Their leaves are thicker, more drought-tolerant, and require less intensive care.
Application:
With its small, elegant appearance, white reticulated grass is perfect for desks, coffee tables, and small spaces. It adds a touch of natural beauty to any indoor setting.
