Mango peanut

Family: Asteraceae

Species: Perennial Herbs

Origin: Native to tropical Asia and South America, this plant is commonly known as manna peanut. It features bright yellow flowers, a long green period, strong ornamental value, and remains evergreen throughout the year.

Morphological Characteristics:

This species has a well-developed root system, with taproots reaching up to 30 cm in length and numerous fibrous roots and nodules. The compound leaves are alternate, with two pairs of lobes. At around 7 PM, the leaves close, and they are obovate with entire margins. The plant typically grows to a height of 10–15 cm. The flower buds are butterfly-shaped, golden yellow, and highly colorful. After flowering, it produces long, peach-like fruits with thin shells that remain on the plant for an extended time. These fruits are easily dispersed, resulting in a relatively low harvest rate.

Growth Habits:

The cultivar is vigorous, with latent buds at the base of the petiole, multiple branches, and the ability to root and spread, forming a dense ground cover 4–10 cm thick. It thrives in full sun or partial shade, with strong resistance to adverse conditions. While it can grow in various soils, sandy loam is preferred. The optimal temperature range for growth is 18–32°C. Manna peanuts are drought-tolerant, heat-resistant, and have strong resistance to harmful gases.

Propagation:

Manna peanuts can be propagated through sowing or cuttings. Due to the labor-intensive nature of seed collection, cuttings are now widely used. Cuttings are typically carried out in spring, summer, and autumn, preferably during the rainy season or on cloudy days. Mid-section cuttings are recommended, as they promote early rooting and more branching. Fertilization after the plants regreen can help boost growth.

Value:

Manna peanuts are highly resistant to harmful gases, making them ideal for use as ground cover in garden greenbelts and along highways. Their extensive root system also makes them suitable for planting on slopes and highways to prevent soil erosion. Additionally, they can be used as green manure to improve soil quality, for pasture and park landscaping, and for soil and water conservation.

Ornamental Value:

With its evergreen foliage and strong resistance to weeds, diseases, and pests, manna peanuts require minimal maintenance. They rarely need pruning, which helps save labor and resources. This makes them an excellent choice for ground cover. Currently, they are widely cultivated in Taiwan, and have been gradually introduced in Fujian and Guangdong in recent years. With their versatility and resilience, manna peanuts show great potential for future landscaping and ecological applications.
