In 2001, the total output reached 6333.9 tons, accounting for 27.2% of the world's total meat production. The per capita consumption was 50.54 kg, which is significantly higher than the global average of 38.51 kg. However, despite this impressive output, the overall processing volume remains low—less than 10% of the total production—and the level of processing is still very basic. Additionally, the export volume is less than 1% of the total output. The modernization of the meat industry largely depends on the development and improvement of meat processing machinery. Without advanced equipment, it's impossible to discuss rapid development in the modern meat food industry. The growth of the meat food sector is the result of collaboration between processing equipment and technology. The effectiveness of this cooperation determines the progress of both equipment innovation and process improvement. As one advances, the other follows, creating a cycle of mutual development and enhancement. Currently, there are fewer than 3,000 meat processing enterprises in China, with total assets reaching nearly 40 billion yuan. Since the 1980s, over 200 enterprises across 21 provinces have introduced more than 200 sets of foreign meat processing equipment. These imports have played a crucial role in improving China’s processing capacity, product diversification, and modernization. However, these machines are not sufficient for a country with a population of 1.3 billion and a large livestock industry. As the supporting department for meat processing enterprises, what should we do? I feel a deep sense of responsibility. Although the meat processing machinery industry has made some progress over the past decade, the situation is still far from ideal. At the "Second Meat Processing Machinery" trade fair held by the China Meat Research Center in 1994, only about 10 companies participated. Today, that number has grown to over 100, but the manufacturing capabilities of these companies remain limited. Most of them are outdated, with annual production and sales below 1 million yuan. Some even operate as "three-no" enterprises, producing substandard products that disrupt the market and lower quality standards. This chaotic environment makes it difficult for genuine competitors to thrive. Each company operates independently, lacking integration, concentration, and technological advancement. To address this, the logistics and equipment departments of the meat processing industry must take responsibility. We need to self-regulate, improve standards, and catch up with global leaders. Here are several questions we should consider: First, how can we quickly establish industry norms and standardize our meat processing machinery? Second, how can we set up an effective industry management organization, such as a chamber or association, to supervise and manage the sector? Third, how can we organize and classify meat processing machinery enterprises based on regional conditions, while promoting domestic brands like Zhonghua, Stork, Polyka, and Huntman? We welcome healthy competition but oppose disorderly practices. Finally, how can we systematically absorb and adapt foreign technologies through state agencies and industry associations? By addressing these issues, we can move closer to a more efficient, standardized, and competitive meat processing industry in China.
