Measuring the protein content of the spinal cord can detect Alzheimer's disease

Release date: 2009-03-20

American researchers have found a way to detect early Alzheimer's disease, with an accuracy of 87%.
Another group of researchers found that people with diabetes have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, and dementia symptoms worsen faster.
According to reports, the new method is to measure the protein content in the spinal fluid and detect the disease before the symptoms of dementia and other cognitive impairments occur. Leslie Shaw of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine said: "We can examine and track the development of Alzheimer's disease through new methods."
In the trial, the researchers performed a spinal fluid analysis of 410 patients enrolled in a large-scale Alzheimer's disease survey. It was found that a person with a low protein concentration called amyloid beta 42 is prone to develop Alzheimer's disease, probably because of the accumulation of this protein in the blood spots of the brain.
They also found that people with low levels of tau in the spinal fluid are also prone to become dementia. Leslie Shaw said: "The tau protein enters the spinal fluid, which may be caused by the release of intracellular substances when nerve cells are about to die."
Their research is published in the Annals of Neurology. Meditech Medical Network
