Pakistan’s Center for Molecular Biology, CEMB, said on Tuesday that the center has used genetically modified methods to develop a new type of “Indian jasmine riceâ€. This new variety of rice will be sent to the Ministry of Agriculture for biosafety testing, and if it is passed, it can be put on the market. At present, markets around the world have maintained a very cautious attitude toward genetically modified agricultural products. Many countries have banned the import of genetically modified agricultural products. Members of the Pakistan Rice Exporters Association (REAP) have been watching the changes in attitudes around the world for GM rice imports. The cultivation of GM rice in Pakistan is not encouraging, and exporters are encouraging the production and export of traditional rice. The evidence gathered by REAP shows that GM foods are still a considerable distance from successful market entry. It is clear that the world’s biotech industry has not realized that the benefits of their claimed biotechnology have caused a huge economic disaster. Large-scale genetic pollution has seriously affected the production of non-genetically modified agricultural products, which has already undermined the competitiveness of North American agriculture. Genetically modified agricultural products also increase farmers' dependence on herbicides and cause new weed problems as well as many legal issues. Biotechnology claims that it is not possible to increase unit yields as a whole. As traditional agricultural products are contaminated, and most products cannot be sold, most of the world’s farmers who use traditional techniques are resisting GM agricultural products. However, since almost all the seeds have been contaminated by genetically modified organisms, farmers have found that planting non-genetically modified agricultural products is almost impossible.
