Japan uses laser to cultivate transgenic plants

Scientists at Osaka University in Japan have developed a new technology that utilizes lasers to grow transgenic plants and are expected to reach practical levels within this year. According to Professor Xiaolin Zhaoxiong of the school, the new technology uses ultraviolet laser to cut the cell wall of the plant and then uses the very fine needle to inject the required gene into it. Experiments with onions show that this method is successful. Professor Kobayashi has applied for a patent for this technology. The patent on genetically modified plant technology was basically dominated by American and European companies. It is said that the new method of using lasers in Japan does not touch existing patents and is a brand-new genetically modified technology.
