India cultivates high protein potatoes

RB Singh, a scientist at the National Farms Commission of India, said that a genetically engineered potato rich in protein will be commercially tested in India. This potato was successfully developed by Asis Datta, a plant genetic research center of Jawaharlal Nehru University. It was named “protato”, pro represented protein, and “tato” represented potato. Its protein content was higher than that of common potato due to gene transfer from plants of the genus Polygonum. The protein content is 35% higher. Potatoes are tuber crops rich in starch and contain only 1% of protein, while Brassica crops have nutrient-rich leaves and seeds for cooking. Scientists have separated genes from the Brassica crop responsible for protein synthesis and introduced it into potatoes, which increases the protein content of potatoes.
