How to mix crab and fish

Polyculture of crabs and fish is typically categorized into two main types: crab-fish polyculture and fish-crab mixed culture. In the first approach, crabs are the primary species, with a moderate number of fish added to the system. The second method focuses on fish as the main species, with crabs introduced in appropriate quantities. Both systems share common advantages: they make efficient use of pond space and feed resources, increase the yield of selected species without affecting the output of the main cultured species, and ultimately improve economic returns. In crab and fish polyculture ponds, it's common to introduce non-predatory fish species such as tilapia, carp, and oysters. However, carnivorous fish like bluegill and grass carp should not be included, as they may compete or even prey on the crabs. The stocking density for crabs remains similar to that of single-species farming. A small number of fish are usually added, typically around 400 to 700 fingerlings per pond. In fish-crab mixed ponds, if the fish population is maintained at normal levels, juvenile crabs can be stocked at a density of 400 to 600 per mu. Water quality must be carefully monitored—especially during hot weather. If fish begin to show signs of floating at the surface, it’s a sign of low oxygen levels, and immediate water changes or aeration should be performed. Additionally, because these integrated systems often lack sufficient antifreeze mechanisms, crabs should be harvested promptly when temperatures drop to prevent cold stress. This careful management ensures a balanced and productive aquaculture environment.
