Iowa’s rivers. They are our waterways. The home of countless Iowa wildlife. Transportation hubs. Beloved recreational spots. The location of countless family memories and moments.
And they are more endangered today than they have been before.
Two organizations with a clear vision and a deep commitment to bettering the quality of life and health of Iowa’s people and natural resources – N-Compass and B4 Brands — have formed a lasting partnership that is improving the cleanliness and quality of the state’s rivers one stream at a time.
Iowa Project AWARE – A Watershed Awareness River Expedition – is the Hawkeye State’s largest river cleanup event. This influential educational program improves the health of Iowa’s rivers and streams.
“The mission of N-Compass is to protect and improve the environment and natural resources through environmental education and community involvement,†said Iowa Project AWARE’s Lynette Seigley.
Providing hand sanitizer for this all-important project is B4 Brands, the Lisbon, Iowa-based hygiene company with an environmental health focus. The partnership, now in its 19th year, has helped remove nearly one million pounds of trash from Iowa’s rivers and waterways. B4 Brands has supplied hand sanitizer for Iowa Project AWARE since 2005.
“From our perspective, we had spent time and testing to try to make our hand sanitizer environmentally friendly and partnering with a group that is focused on cleaning up the environment along with educating people on how to maintain clean waterways made abundant sense,†B4 Brands president Dave Jansen said. “When we received the first recap on the program from Lynette, we were sold on this great cause.â€
Trouble Running Deep in Iowa’s Waters
Sadly, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports more than half of Iowa’s tested streams and lakes are impaired. The number of Iowa water body segments that do not meet water quality standards for recreation, public water supplies and protection of aquatic life is 721 (DNR report says more than half of Iowa streams are impaired (desmoinesregister.com).
There is a glimmer of clear water in that troubling report. The number of impaired water body segments – lakes, wetlands and parts of streams – declined 4% of the 2022 report. But only 24% of Iowa’s tested stream segments and 30% of tested lakes were deemed healthy last month.
The main cause for Iowa’s poor river health: elevated bacteria concentrations.
“That’s an abysmal number,†David Cwiertny, director of the Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination at the University of Iowa, told the Des Moines Register. “It shows we’ve got really severe water quality problems.â€
But we have defenders answering the call to protect Iowa’s rivers.
What is Project Aware?
Iowa Project AWARE is a call to action, a call to public awareness and a call to public commitment to protect, defend and improve the quality of Iowa’s rivers and waterways. During Iowa Project AWARE, volunteers mix fun and service and get a little muddy in the process as they explore an Iowa river, remove trash and learn more about watersheds, geology, archaeology, recycling and other important natural resource topics.
The expedition not only showcases scenic parts of the Hawkeye State but offers opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with the river and become closer to it.
This is not an undertaking for people afraid to get a little dirt under their fingernails, but a fun, mission-focused canoe and kayak trip down Iowa’s most scenic, important and endangered waterways. This year’s Project AWARE Tour will run July 7-12 and travel 75.6 miles down the Skunk River with a kickoff at Lake Darling State Park in Brighton.
Since Iowa Project AWARE’s first trip down the Maquoketa River in 2003, it has had a deep positive impact on Iowa’s rivers and waterways. Three dozen volunteers spent a week of their summer camping, canoeing and picking up trash along the mighty Maquoketa. Iowa Project AWARE’s work since its first cleanup has been remarkable.
- 6,223 volunteers from across the country have been part of the effort
- 1,429 river miles have been cleaned
- 979,480 pounds of trash have been removed
- 81% of trash has been recycled
- 50 additional cleanup events inspired or advised by AWARE
B4 Brands: A Partner for a ‘Worthwhile Cause’
By providing hand sanitizer for Iowa Project AWARE volunteers, B4 Brands is helping an essential Iowa environmental preservation mission work with clean hands.
“Our goal has been to look at how our products might assist the volunteers who are doing this amazing work in staying healthy and promoting good hand hygiene in conjunction with their efforts of cleaning our streams and waterways,†Jansen said. “It is my hope that our small act will be duplicated by other companies so that we can cumulatively make a difference in our state and with this fine organization.â€
B4 Brands plans to be on call for many river cleanups to come.
From the Des Moines to the Little Sioux, the Cedar to the Wapsipinicon, the Boone to the Little Turkey, Iowa Project AWARE and B4 Brands are dedicated to cleansing and revitalizing Iowa’s rivers, one stream at a time.
“Our goal is to remain a partner and to respond to the growing needs and commitments of this worthwhile cause,†Jansen said.
